The Maintenance Mindset: Full-Service Oil Change At Porter Tire & Auto

Full-Service Oil Change CarterCarter people generally accept that many things in life require regular maintenance: their teeth, clothes, yards and so on, but KY car owners often don’t apply the idea of maintenance to their vehicles.

If you never brush your teeth or go to the dentist, you’ll become painfully aware of your neglect when you get a big cavity. Once the damage is done, we learn our important lesson and start to take better care of things.

Unfortunately, Olive Hill people too often learn the hard automotive lesson when they bring their vehicle to Porter Tire & Auto on a tow truck. So many times, a little routine maintenance would have prevented an expensive breakdown.

So how do Olive Hill car owners get into the habit of taking care of their family cars? It’s so easy to forget; not like cutting the grass which you see it every time you pull in the driveway.

Here’s something that will help: The key to good family car maintenance starts with the oil change. Think about it – when you go in for a full-service oil change in Olive Hill, your caring Porter Tire & Auto service specialist will check all your fluids. If one of them is low, he can look for the reason why. If your serpentine belt is worn, he’ll see it and let you know. Corroded battery cable – they’ve got you covered. And they’ll check to see if your manufacturer has recommended any important services at your current mileage.

The oil change becomes kind of a focal point, a way to check in to see what needs to be done.

The fact is that vehicle inspection surveys consistently reveal that over 80% of vehicles have one or more unperformed repair or maintenance service. Vehicles are generally very reliable and can take a lot of abuse and neglect – but you can only press your luck so long.

So when you come into Porter Tire & Auto for an oil change, you get a visual inspection of your car and a reminder for recommended services so you can avoid a total failure. And remember that your service specialist can help you work out a maintenance and repair plan for your family car, prioritizing and scheduling the work to make sure you and your family are safe, and avoid expensive breakdowns.

In addition to full-service oil changes, at Porter Tire & Auto we also offer battery service, PCV valve replacement and windshield treatment.

Disc Brake Maintenance At Porter Tire & Auto In Olive Hill

Disc Brake Pad Replacement Olive HillHello Olive Hill motorists. Today, we’re talking about disc brakes. Your vehicle weighs several thousand pounds and it takes a lot of force to bring it and your passengers to a safe stop – so everything needs to be in good working order.

The wheel hub keeps your wheel attached to the family car. The brake disc – or rotor – is attached to the hub and spins with the wheel as you drive. Your brake pads clamp onto the rotor to slow the wheel. The brake caliper straddles the rotor and squeezes the rotor to slow it down. The calipers contain brake pads which rub on the rotor when you step on the brakes. The brake piston causes the calipers to squeeze and release as you use your brakes.

Your family car brake pads start to wear the first time you step on the brakes. Eventually the pads are worn out and need to be replaced. If you don’t replace brake pads when they’re worn out, the metal parts of the brake will grind against the rotor and carve grooves into the surface.

If a scored rotor isn’t too bad, your caring Olive Hill technician can put the rotor on a lathe and smooth it out. If the grooves are too deep, or if the rotor is warped or cracked, you need to replace it. At Porter Tire & Auto, we have been servicing disc brakes for Olive Hill motorists for 2 years.

Servicing disc brakes at Porter Tire & Auto require special attention to the mechanical sliding and mounting portions of the system. Your Porter Tire & Auto service supplier knows the special needs. Sometimes brake pistons can stick and must be replaced. Typically it’s cheaper to replace the entire caliper at Olive Hill auto service centers than to rebuild the piston.

So there you have it – a brief Porter Tire & Auto guide to how your disc brakes work. Olive Hill motorists who replace their brake pads on time will not only keep their family car stopping safely, but could save money on unnecessary brake repair down the road.

Chilling In Carter With Winter Tires

Best Price On Snow Tires Olive HillThere’s more to winter tires than Olive Hill drivers may think. Those days of clunky, tractor-like snow tires are long gone in KY, replaced by high-tech winter tires with special rubber compounds and advanced tread designs.

In Olive Hill winter temperatures, the rubber in summer tires becomes hard and inflexible and they don’t grip the road as well. In contrast, winter tires use special rubber compounds that are more pliable when the thermometer drops below 45 degrees in KY giving you better road contact; so even if you don’t get much snow, winter tires will really add to your cold weather safety in Olive Hill.

Winter tires may also use a micro-pore rubber compound that increases surface area so they can bite into ice and packed snow on Olive Hill roads and expressways.

The tread on winter tires needs to clear out water, snow and slush as the tire turns so it’s ready to take another bite when it comes back in contact with the road. But summer tires can actually be dangerous because they get packed with snow, making them very slick, and your vehicle hard to control. Winter tires have a lot of thin slits in the tread called sipes which help the tire grab ice and packed snow, providing extra traction.

Many new vehicles in Carter come with all-season tires which are great for a wide range of Carter weather and road conditions, but don’t provide top performance in KY snow and ice. For example winter tires provide 25 to 50% more traction than all-season tires. And all-season tires take up to 42% longer to stop than winter tires in slick Grahn conditions.

For all these reasons, the tire experts at Porter Tire & Auto in Olive Hill recommend you put winter tires on all four wheels because it makes sense to have equal traction and handling at all four corners of your vehicle. Uneven traction could result in loss of control for Carter drivers.

Your vehicle may be equipped with stability control, anti-lock brakes and traction control – all important safety systems for KY drivers. But in order to do their job you still need good traction in Emerson. Winter tires help you start, stop and corner when things get cold and slippery in Olive Hill.

So when Carter temperatures drop below 45 degrees, be sure you have a set of four winter tires for maximum performance in snow, ice and wet Olive Hill roads. Your caring Porter Tire & Auto tire professional can help you find the right winter tire for your vehicle and driving needs in Olive Hill.

Power Steering Service At Porter Tire & Auto

Carter Power Steering ServiceIt’s easy for Olive Hill car owners to take power steering for granted – you spin the steering wheel and your car turns. But behind the scenes your power steering is making it easy.

The vast majority of vehicles on Carter expressways have hydraulic power steering systems, which means that pressurized fluid is used to help you do the work of steering. A pump pressurizes the power steering fluid to provide the boost you need. In some Olive Hill car owners’ vehicles the pump is driven by the serpentine belt, in other there’s an electric pump.

The problem for Olive Hill car owners is that over time, the fluid becomes contaminated and can actually cause leaks in the hoses and connections. It gets harder to steer and could even cause total failure of the power steering system.

Periodically, your caring Porter Tire & Auto service advisor may recommend you change transmission fluid which involves removing the old, dirty fluid and replacing with fresh fluid. This helps the power steering components last longer and maintains your vehicle’s steering performance and keeps you safely on the road in Olive Hill. Your Porter Tire & Auto technician will also have your system checked for leaks and the belt inspected for other pending needs. Ask if it’s time to perform a power steering service on your family car today.

Your Courtesy Inspection At Porter Tire & Auto Service In Olive Hill

Courtesy Inspection At Porter Tire & Auto In Olive HillMost Olive Hill motorists come to their caring Porter Tire & Auto service adviser with specific services in mind and an idea of how much they’ll be spending. Sometimes, a courtesy car inspection and a review of your service history will uncover additional items that require attention. How should you react to that?

Here’s some advice: It’s not as if your caring Porter Tire & Auto service adviser is saying “Do you want fries with that?” or “Supersize for 59 cents more.” He’s not recommending something extra or something you don’t need.

Recommendations are either based on the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule or on a problem uncovered during a diagnostic examination.

An important part of the Porter Tire & Auto service advisor‘s role is to help you understand the auto manufacturers recommendations: recommendations that cover every system on the family car and are set by the engineers that design the family car. Replace Your Engine Air Filter At Porter Tire & Auto

Olive Hill Car AdviceWhen driving around Carter, your family car engine needs clean air to burn the fuel – and it needs a lot. In fact, a typical vehicle needs about 216,000 gallons of air for every tank of gas.

All that air passes through a filter that catches the dust and dirt. Eventually the filter gets completely full. Because the filter can only hold so much, dirt starts getting through. This dirty air passes through the mass airflow sensor, and starts to accumulate on the delicate sensor element. The mass air flow sensor measures how much air is getting into your engine. When the airflow reading is incorrect, your family car engine doesn’t get the proper amount of fuel. It runs rough and doesn’t perform as well as it should.

Eventually, the sensor is so damaged it needs to be replaced – which is pricy. In fact you could buy a case or two of air filters for the cost of a sensor replacement.

Of course, that dirty air keeps on going through to your family car engine where it’s burned along with the fuel, which dirties up your combustion chamber and increases harmful exhaust emissions – not a good thing for Olive Hill air quality, not to mention our lungs.

When your caring Porter Tire & Auto service advisor brings out your dirty air filter and recommends a replacement, remember the cost and poor performance that can be waiting for you down the road if you neglect this simple Porter Tire & Auto service. Ask your Porter Tire & Auto advisor if it’s time to replace your engine air filter.

Prevent Cooling System Problems In Carter

Car Advice Olive Hill

Cooling system problems are the most common reason for mechanical failure in Carter County. And, they’re largely avoidable.

Here’s what Olive Hill drivers need to know about their cooling system. First, the terms coolant and antifreeze are pretty much used interchangeably in Kentucky. The fluid cools your engine while it’s running and it keeps it from freezing when it’s cold.

Your cooling system is filled with a 50/50 mixture of water and antifreeze/coolant. So if you’re topping off antifreeze/coolant, it is key to add the proper amount of each. Distilled water is much better than tap water. Now you can buy pre-mixed coolant so make sure you know what you’re putting in.

Two more cautions for Carter County drivers: first, never add coolant when the engine is hot. This can lead to serious burns. Second, there are many antifreeze formulas. Your manufacturer recommends a specific type that won’t harm your cooling system components. Use the wrong fluid and you could void your cooling system warranty.

At Porter’s Tire & Auto Service we can help you with all this just like we have for more than 50 years.

All auto makers have schedules for when you should change your coolant. It’s key to follow the schedule, because neglecting your cooling system allows the fluid to become corrosive. You’ll get leaks which can lead to expensive damage. Check with your service adviser at Porter’s Tire & Auto Service in Olive Hill to see if it’s time for a cooling system inspection and service.

Give us a call or come in to get your cooling system checked by our ASE Certified Master Mechanic.  Making sure our neighbors, friends and family are safe on the road is our top priority and one of the reasons why we were voted TOP TIRE STORE IN CARTER COUNTY.

It Is NEVER Okay To Drive With An Unbuckled Child!

Saferkids-national-child-passenger-safety-week-2The study titled “Buckle Up: Every Ride, Every Time,” revealed an alarming percentage of parents are not always taking the time to ensure their children are safely secured in vehicles.  You can — and should — read the complete study here. Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death to children. In 2011, 679 children aged 12 and under died in motor vehicle crashes, and a third of these children (221) were riding without a child safety seat or seat belt that could have saved their lives.

“It only takes one time to be riding in a vehicle without buckling up for a life to be changed forever,” said Kate Carr, president and CEO of Safe Kids Worldwide.  “During Child Passenger Safety week, we want to remind all parents that it’s important to buckle up their kids every time, on every ride.

“Buckle Up: Every Ride, Every Time,” is encouraging parents and caregivers to follow these three safety strategies consistently:

1. Buckle up on every ride, every time

2.  Talk to the adults who will be driving your kids about buckling them up

3.  Check that the right seat is used and that it is installed properly
Saferkids-national-child-passenger-safety-weekAre your kids the kind who try to wriggle out of their belts? Just pull over and do not drive again until they are properly buckled back in. Cadillac even has an awesome Automatic Occupant Sensing System in their SRX utility vehicle displays icons on the dash to indicate which rear seats are occupied and whether those passengers have safely buckled
their seatbelts. You don’t even have to turn your head to check.

Make it a good habit to establish proper seatbelt use as your children grow up. “As kids grow up, it can be easy to forget the importance of taking time to buckle up, especially on a quick or overnight trip,” said Mike Robinson, GM vice president of Sustainability and Global Regulatory Affairs, and a GM Foundation board member. “Unfortunately, exceptions can lead to tragedies. The research findings underscore the importance of remaining vigilant about buckling up throughout a child’s lifetime. There is no reason important enough to take the risk.”

Child Passenger Safety Week culminates with National Seat Check Saturday on September 21. SafeKids.org will host more than 500 child seat inspections across the country, offering guidance from certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians on proper installation of child safety and booster seats. Parents and caregivers can visit safekids.org to locate an event in their community. Not sure if your child safety seat is properly installed?  Find a car seat checkup event in your area this week, or anytime during the year, where a nationally certified child passenger safety technician can help provide one-on-one instruction on installing your car and booster seats.

Tire Service At Porter Tire & Auto In Olive Hill

Tire Mounting Olive Hill

For most motorists buying tires in Olive Hill is a big deal, so consult with your caring Porter Tire & Auto tire professional about proper size, type and grade for your driving needs. He can help you balance load requirements, fuel efficiency, performance, durability and cost.

When buying new tires in Olive Hill, it’s best to replace both tires on the same axle in order to keep the rolling diameter as close as possible.

Olive Hill motorists with four-wheel-drive vehicles should replace all four tires at the same time because you can run into problems if the tires have different rolling diameters due to wear or different type of tire. Four wheel drive vehicles should have all tires very close to the same rolling diameter to avoid binding and wheel hop between the front and rear axles.

Also, KY tire manufacturers recommend that if you are buying just two new tires that they be installed on the rear for safer slippery road traction – regardless of which wheels drive the vehicle. Porter Tire & Auto in Olive Hill has you covered for all of your tire needs including tire repair, tire mounting, wheel balancing, and wheel alignment. We also provide electrical system test, battery service, PCV valve replacement, and windshield treatment.
