Tire Swing Memories

You can always count on Porter’s Tire & Auto Service to provide you with quality auto care and tires to help take you and your family from POINT A to POINT B…even when POINT B is found only in the imagination of a child or memory of that child all grown up.

THE TIRE SWING

A poem by Zach McClure

He gazed across
The wind-swept meadow
To a lone tree
Standing there

Its jagged, silhouette
Surrendered ‘neath
A sky more firey embered
Than his flaming hair
Which crowned him then

But it was neither tree nor sky
That stole his youthful eye.
It was the tire swing
Whispering, promising,
“With-me, you can fly!”

The boy lept across the meadow
Like a deer panting for water,
Till at last
He climbed aboard his dream.
His round, black, holed
Flying machine.

Then, holding tight,
And bending to and fro
With all his might
Began to drive
Began to glide against
The sinking sun
Till it was night outside

Across the starry littered sky
Beneath the moon’s soft lullaby
Ascending ever higher
Make believing
He’s a flyer,
He smiles,
As he tips a wing.
He is an aviator.
He is the sky king!
And all because of one,
Old tire swing.

The Porter Tire & Auto Guide To Selecting Tires And Wheels

Deals On Tires In Olive HillSome Carter auto owners love driving, love their vehicles: To them, picking out the right tire is just as important – and just as much fun – as finding the right shoes is to a runner.

Now not everyone in Carter is like that. Many KY people have found that shopping for tires is overwhelming because there are just so many choices. So let’s break it down: there are four main categories of tires, depending on the kind of driving you do.

First, there are summer tires. You would buy summer tires if you’re looking for maximum summertime performance. The rubber is a little softer to help you stick to the road in fast corners. The tread has wide blocks at the shoulder to stiffen the tire in turns. The tread design can handle rain, but really isn’t set up for snow and ice.

Next comes winter tires. You would buy winter tires if you still like performance driving when it’s cold and slippery out, so you need a tread design that’ll really bite into ice and snow. The rubber compound is formulated to stay pliable when temperatures drop below 45 degrees so you get great traction even on dry roads. On the other end of the winter tire spectrum are tires designed to handle severe ice and snow conditions.

The third category is all-season tires. Now, most new cars come with all-seasons in Carter. The idea is a tire that you can use all-year round in KY. Naturally, the tread design and rubber compound is a compromise that won’t give you the extreme capabilities of summer or winter tires, but if your driving and weather conditions aren’t at the extreme ends of the spectrum, all-season tires might suit you just fine.

The last category is all-terrain tires. These tires are designed for both Olive Hill expressway and off-road use. If you need a tire that gets good traction in the dirt and is tough enough for rocks and ruts and stuff, but still performs well on the road, an all-terrain tire might be just what you need.

Making Your Vehicle Last With Regular Service in Olive Hill

Making Your Vehicle Last A lot of people in KY have older vehicles. They’re good commuters, grocery-getters or toy-haulers. They enjoy that fact that they’re paid off, or soon will be. They would gladly like to keep their vehicles for 200,000 miles or more – as long as it’s economical to do so.

There are plenty of people in Olive Hill whose vehicles are running after 150,000 or 200,000 miles. We can learn from what they’re doing to keep our own cars on the road.

A common denominator is that they Continue reading

Need A Suspension Inspection At Porter Tire & Auto In Olive Hill?

Wheel Alignment Carter

Your suspension system keeps your car up off the road. From there, it’s responsible for a smooth and comfortable ride around Carter. It also keeps your family car wheels firmly planted over bumps and through curves on Olive Hill roads and interstates.

Your suspension system has many key parts that do a big job. They should be inspected for damage and excessive wear at least once a year. A good time would be when you get your alignment check in Olive Hill.

Here are some warning signs of suspension problems: the family car pulls to one side, wandering, erratic steering, uneven tire wear, leaning, shocks bottom out, poor ride or handling, oil leaking from shocks, and excessive bouncing.

Now family car suspension parts just wear out over time. Shocks and struts eventually lose their ability to control your ride. If you’re in an accident, your family car suspension can be damaged or knocked out of alignment. Even a minor accident, like hitting a curb, pothole or large rock can mess things up.

If you suspect suspension problems, ask for an inspection and let the caring service advisors at Porter Tire & Auto in Olive Hill set things right.

What

serpentine belt Grahn

All of us in Olive Hill have those days when we’ve got a bunch of errands to run around the Grahn and Olive Hill area. Suppose on your day off you need to get gas, pick up some groceries, swing by your Olive Hill ATM and get the kids from school. Now you could make four trips, but that would be a waste of time and money – totally inefficient. Instead you get organized and hit the ATM first and get some gas next. Then you go to your Olive Hill supermarket and pick up the Continue reading

Under Pressure: Your TPMS System In Olive Hill

Under Pressure Your TPMS System In Olive Hill

Flats, blow outs, skids and longer stopping distances can all be the result of Olive Hill folks driving around on under-inflated tires. Now, it’s hard to tell when a radial tire is under-inflated but your service technician at Porter Tire & Auto can help you. The tire may not look low until it gets below 20 pounds – which is significantly under-inflated.

Your newer family car or light truck might be equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). This technology has been used by KY race car drivers for years. They are able to head off problems from under inflation by closely monitoring tire pressure on the track.

Obviously, TMPS systems don’t come free for Olive Hill car buyers. U.S. government studies have estimated the net costs of the TPMS system itself, maintaining the system, replacement of worn or broken parts and tire repair cost increases. The costs are partially offset for Olive Hill drivers by savings in fuel and tire wear. There’s also a saving in property damage and travel delay. The net cost is estimated to be between $27 and $100.

The government predicts fewer fatal accidents. They estimate that is will cost between three and nine million dollars for every life saved. This new safety equipment will help Olive Hill motorists avoid the most common vehicle failure, and possibly a catastrophic accident.
